Characters & Costumes

Please note that there are two variations of Dice with Death. If you have purchased the 10 player version, please note that Greta More, Pierre De'aler, The Prince and Princess are not playable characters.

Trixie Adams – The ex-wife of Mr Menny Notes, you have been used to a life of luxury since the rather public divorce. Although you describe yourself as a little plain girl from Texas, you are far from it. Your fake tan, big hair, and leopard print dress means that you certainly stand out from the crowd!

Jimmy Bone – The name is Bone. Jimmy Bone. Your staple look of tux and bow tie is always immaculate, and what is that tucked in your trousers? Oh – a revolver.

James Burrows – As Notes’ PA, you always look a little shabby and underpaid… but smartly dressed in a suit. Although Notes would have described you as almost-forgettable, your rugged good looks and calm, intelligent manner ensures your likeability. A subtle earpiece shows how you take your work seriously.

Bruce Canga – A seemingly Australian tourist looking rather out of place in a casino, your barmah hat, khaki shorts, and knapsack exaggerate the look. You are never seen without your flask, and no-one really knows why you are here… including you!

Pierre De’aler – The casino croupier, De’aler is known for being the face of Notes’ promotional videos for this opening night. Your long white shirt, black waistcoat and bow tie make it simple to spot you. Remember to bring your poker face.

Le Digít – No-one knows you too well, but you have more influence than anyone could ever realise. An investment banker, with an ominous bleeding eye, your all-black suit exaggerates the coldness emanating from you. You are always seen with your inhaler and lucky poker chip in hand, seemingly to help with your nerves.

Shirley Holmes – You are a well-known Private Detective trying to keep out of the spotlight, but miserably failing. Dressed in smart attire for a big event, everyone can still spot you as your magnifying glass and dark sunglasses give you away.

Scarlet Leta – Dressed in a crimson cocktail dress with lips to match, you really are a blonde bombshell. However, you are not just a pretty face: you have multiple degrees, are a medical Doctor, and a published author. You have brought your medical equipment to the event out of habit, and always have something interesting to say.

Greta More – A renowned journalist reporting for an international news outlet, you always want more from your stories. You are trying to blend in to the crowd with your cocktail dress, although your pen and paper in hand slightly spoils the look.

Nicola ‘Nic’ Notes – Although you are Mr Menny Notes’ only child, you try not to mention it. Beautiful, and intelligent, your elegant cocktail dress and clutch bag display pure sophistication and style.

Ginger O’Blaze – An employee at the hotel, you sing, dance, and attend to all of your guests needs. Dressed in sequins, feather boas, and an ostentatious ginger wig, Ginger is sure to get the sparks flying!

The Prince – A dashing European Prince and heir to the throne, you are here supporting the local events. Your impressive tux, white bow tie and sash are always immaculate… and don’t forget those army medals adorning your chest!

The Princess – Although you are married to the Prince, you also are from a long line of aristocracy and are simply adored by the public. You are everything a Princess should be: elegant, beautiful, and timeless. Your tiara, long white gloves, and exquisite jewellery are all very tasteful.

Lewis Zoomacher – A prominent Formula One driver, and the boyfriend of Scarlet Leta, Notes has always taken an interest in your career. You always like to make a statement by turning up with your racing helmet under your arm. You just couldn’t leave your work at home!

Hosting Tips

At Mystery Club, we know a fundamental part of the party is the planning process! We have put together the below hints and tips to help inspire your events. Make sure you send us your photos so we can see how your evening went!

Ambience

The first step when planning your party is creating an atmosphere. Choosing a specific theme will immerse your guests and make your event come to life!

See our tips below:

  • Consider the casino floor plan at the back of the character booklets to help create Dice with Death in your own space.

  • Pick the theme of your room(s). Use your own house to help: do you have a kitchen island which would make a nice bar area? Or perhaps a few tables that could make different 'game' tables throughout the evening? These do not have to be big.

  • Decide what each room will do: the living room may be the 'casino', whereas the dining room/kitchen could be just for eating/laying out food.

  • Perhaps hang signs or make a card for each of the 'casino' game areas.

  • Hide any technology by putting dark cloths over them. Alternatively, put an image of a roulette wheel spinning, or slot machines moving, on the screen instead.

  • Make the lighting match the theme of the casino. We would suggest adding background sounds of slot machines or roulette boards spinning!

Decorations

Our favourite part of planning for a murder mystery party, without doubt, is the decorations. Whether you are on a budget, or have a little spare cash, there is something everyone can do to transform their space.

See below for some of our top tips and tricks:

  • Make your main space the casino.

  • Create a body for Mr Menny Notes somewhere in the house in a makeshift 'penthouse': you could create a chalk outline, or even make a dummy body!

  • Take this further, if you’d like, and add a crime scene tape around the body. You could even place crime scene evidence markers around it!

  • Place an empty martini glass near this.

  • Make a drinks bar. Create a cocktail menu and place it in a frame to really add authenticity!

  • Put casino images on your TV screen, such as spinning roulette wheels.

  • Put playing cards around the room, as well as poker chips, roulette wheels, black tablecloth, dice, balloons and streamers around.

  • Create a 'Grand Opening Night' banner as your backdrop for photos!

  • Piles of fake money are in keeping with the casino theme.

  • Use feather plumes for decorations.

  • Have a champagne tower as a backdrop for your photos!

  • Any green material is great for playing casino-related games with!

  • Props involving the characters are always useful: a crown, a camera, a racing helmet, or even a stethoscope are great for guests to comment on!

Refreshments

How you serve your refreshments is completely up to you and can even be themed if you wanted.

Our top tips are as follows:

  • If hosting a sit-down meal, serve the courses just after the Dialogues in each round, but before the Questions and Answers section.

  • Serve your starters or canapes during Round One, your main during Round Two, and dessert during Round Three.

  • If hosting a sit-down meal, make it in keeping with the casino theme so everyone can stay in character whilst seated.

  • For ease and convenience, serve a buffet. Alternatively, order a few takeaway pizzas and have them out on the counters ready for your guests to help themselves as they mingle!

  • Have fun with the drinks! Consider getting out those cocktail glasses at the back of your cupboard and get them out for use, as well as decoration.

  • Turn a table you don’t normally use into a bar - add a black tableloth and a sign. Perhaps even create a cocktail menu and place it in a frame to really make it authentic!

Activities

Don’t be afraid to have some ice-breaking activities during your event. You can do this during the different rounds throughout the night. Guests can ask questions, and answer them, as they play the different games!

Activities we think work well:

  • Examining the floor plan at the back of each booklet as a group

  • Roulette

  • Poker, bridge, blackjack, joker or other card games

  • Horse-racing, or similar events, on TV: you could even print off cards to vote or bet

  • Any fake betting games

  • A pool table

  • A game of craps

  • Dancing on a dance floor (why not create a dance floor out of coloured paper?)

  • Fireworks

  • Voting at the end of the event: have some blank sheets of paper to cast a vote for the murderer just before the Conclusion!
